Concerns over Bulgarian Passports and EU Membership: The Views of North Macedonia’s Foreign Minister

Until our citizens become part of the EU, they will be forced to apply for Bulgarian passports for social and economic reasons. This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the RSM Buyar Osmani, quoted by BTA.

According to him, there is a danger that some circles in Bulgaria will try to abuse the situation of more than 80 thousand citizens of North Macedonia who hold Bulgarian passports.

He touched on the topic of bilateral negotiations between the RSM and Bulgaria, which can open the RSM’s path to EU membership. According to him, the dynamics of Bulgarian politics is so uncertain that we do not know what tomorrow will bring. Osmani emphasized that Bulgaria will continue to set new conditions for the RSM.

The foreign minister indicated that a compromise had been reached between the two sides on action for minorities. We want to shift the topic from historical interpretations and identity issues to human rights and minorities, explained Osmani.

He defined as false the statements that the majority of RSM citizens are against the changes in the Constitution. Citizens reject the insertion of identity-political conflicts into the EU enlargement process. The upcoming constitutional changes will strengthen and expand the country’s multi-ethnic democracy, Osmani added.
