Other people cannot deal with misinformation that can be found online. Many Dutch people have that belief. About 48 percent are concerned about the consequences of misinformation on the internet, but more than three-quarters are convinced that they themselves are capable of recognizing such incorrect messages.
The Social and Cultural Planning Office (SCP) has investigated misinformation. According to the tour, people themselves do not check everything they come across online, “because it takes time and effort”.
People are also concerned about artificial intelligence, they are not sure “whether they will be able to recognize erroneous or misleading information in the future”. A small majority is in favor of limiting freedom of expression to prevent harmful information.
The survey also shows that people are concerned about online manners. They fear that insults, threats and hate speech will have real world consequences. A large part is in favor of measures to counter such messages.
Most Dutch people: things are going in the wrong direction
The SCP also asked people about political topics. More than half think that the Netherlands is going in the wrong direction, and about six in ten people expect economic malaise. A minority has confidence in the cabinet and the House of Representatives.
There is also little confidence in European politics, but most people do want the Netherlands to remain a member of the European Union. Slightly more than half are in favor of Ukraine’s accession, but on the condition that the country meets the requirements for this.
The study, which was released on Thursday, was conducted in April among more than 3,400 Dutch people.
