For the second time within 24 hours, a minor was killed in France in violence between groups of young people. Both times this happened in the department of Essonne, south of Paris.
Monday it came to a violent outbreak in the town of Saint-Chéron at the end of the afternoon. About ten armed youths went to battle, correspondent Frank Renout told NPO Radio 1. “A 14-year-old girl was stabbed in the stomach with a knife and died of her injuries that same evening. In connection with the brawl. Six minors have been arrested. Three of them are only 13 years old. “
A similar incident occurred yesterday in the town of Boussy-Saint-Antoine, some 45 kilometers northeast of Saint-Chéron. At the end of the afternoon, about thirty young people were involved in a fight with knives and sticks.
A 14-year-old boy died after being stabbed in the chest. A 13-year-old boy was stabbed in the neck and was seriously injured in hospital, Renout said. “Seven people have been taken into custody here, all of them underage.”
Many more violent incidents
Police and the Interior Ministry are concerned about the rapid escalation of the fight between youth gangs.
“Last year, there were 357 clashes and fights between youth gangs, 24 percent more than the year before,” said Renout. “Half of it took place in Paris and the surrounding area. In the Essonne department, the violence of youth gangs doubled.”
Interior Minister Darmanin visited the department. He blames the growing youth violence on dropping out of school, hanging out on the street and the lack of parental supervision. The government has sent 50 additional agents to both places to prevent further fighting from breaking out.
