A new corona variant has been found in Cyprus that appears to be a merger of Omikron and predecessor Delta. The new variant therefore bears the name for the time being: Deltakron. The first studies show that the new variant is relatively common among people who are admitted to hospital. Whether this means that the new variant is actually more sickening remains to be investigated.
Deltacron was discovered by Cypriot virologist Leontios Kostrikis. He saw the genetic profile of the Delta variant in new corona patients, combined with mutations that have so far only been observed in Omikron. Cyprus is the only place where this new variant has been noticed for the time being. The Minister of Health of Cyprus will provide more information about Deltakron in a press conference next week.
