Senator’s office issued Mitch McConnell The leader of the Republicans in the US Senate issued a statement from the attending physician at the Capitol after an incident that sparked concern when he appeared to freeze for half a minute while answering reporters’ questions.
Dr. Brian P. Monahan said he consulted with McConnell and also spoke with McConnell’s neurology team, and told the Republican leader he was medically ready to continue his agenda. Monahan did not say he examined McConnell himself.
“After assessing yesterday’s incident, I have informed Senator McConnell that his condition allows him to continue with his schedule as planned,” Monahan said, adding that “occasional dizziness” is not uncommon during concussion recovery and can also be expected as a result of dehydration.
The release of the doctor’s statement comes amid some calls for transparency after the second such incident in a matter of weeks
According to ABC, McConnell suffered a concussion and fractured a rib after a fall earlier this year in Washington and was hospitalized for several days and underwent rehabilitation before returning to the Senate.
On Wednesday, McConnell was at an event in his home state of Kentucky when he suddenly froze at the podium, and the Republican leader was asked if he would run for another term in 2026 when he stopped speaking and stared forward for about 30 seconds, then aides approached him, one of whom told reporters he needed to a minute’s rest.
It was the second time in as many months that the 81-year-old McConnell had become temporarily unresponsive in front of cameras, and his office attributed those moments to dizziness and said little until the Capitol doctor’s statement yesterday evening.
After the incident, a McConnell aide said the senator was feeling fine and would consult a doctor before the next event as a precaution.
