Associations and residents of Rezé are worried about the “catastrophic” fate of these Saudis and Chadians, relocated by the Loire-Atlantique prefecture, who for the most part have a residence permit and work.

On April 4, shortly after the end of the winter breakfifteen migrants were evicted from a home they had occupied for a year in Rezea municipality bordering Nantes. “They were on good terms with their neighbours, their papers were regularized, they had found a job and were starting to rebuild their lives”, indicates in a press release a group of associations, local elected officials and citizens concerned about their future. These Chadians and Saudis occupied an uninhabited house, owned by a developer, who decided to exercise his right to recover it.

“Neither the town hall nor the collectives had reported the situation to the services of the DDETS (Departmental Directorate of Employment, Labor and Solidarity, Editor’s note). The bailiff’s request for execution of the court order mentioned a building occupied by two people.relates to Figaro, the prefecture of Loire-Atlantique. If the expulsion is legal, it is more the conditions in which it took place that are disputed. “It took long negotiations, and the support of elected officials, for them to be able to recover their business”castigates a member of the collective who criticizes the “lack of humanity” in the matter.

First night in a squat
After a first night in another squat in Rezé, an accommodation solution was offered by the prefecture services via the integrated reception and orientation service (SIAO). Ten days later, most are still there. “Of the 14 present situations [l’un des migrants est resté dans un squat de Rezé depuis l’expulsion, NDLR], four people deliberately left the accommodation or did not show up. Two people were redirected towards integration or reception schemes for asylum seekers. Eight other people are still supported on the emergency accommodation offered.lists the prefecture.
If the temporary solution of state services had a deadline of April 14, the care of migrants by state services “will go beyondwould like to reassure Loïc Chusseau, first deputy mayor of Rezé who is following the file. “The prefecture says it is looking for a more permanent solution and more adequate accommodation. She knows that in the current state of things this does not correspond to the needs of people who have a job., he adds. In the meantime, for him, it is essential that the expelled migrants remain in the “common right” to be accompanied by “other social arrangements”.

Work or stay
For the support collective for expelled migrants, the vision of things is different. Denouncing a “catastrophic human situation”he regrets that the group “who worked a lot on mutual aid finds himself dispatched to the four corners of Loire-Atlantique”. In addition, according to the collective, most migrants “no longer have the opportunity to go to work” because they are “moved more than two hours away from their jobs”. To illustrate «l’aberration» ongoing that makes the lives of migrants «impossible», one of the members of the collective takes as an example the case of a security guard in a supermarket in the Nantes conurbation who finishes his service after the center where he is accommodated closes.
“So they have to choose between being housed or working. If they choose accommodation, they have to wait outside all day in neighborhoods that are unfamiliar to them and manage to eat outside, since the buildings at 115 are not always equipped with a kitchen., points out the collective. On the subject of food, a member of the collective indicates another current problem: “All are Muslims and observe Ramadan. At the time of breaking the fast, they are in the centers where they cannot cook themselves.

Precarious occupation agreement
Because of this litany of grievances, the collective urges the prefecture to do better. “We ask the State to take its responsibilities and protect the people who live on its territory”, writes the collective. On Wednesday evening, several of its members met in front of the Hôtel du Cheval Blanc, an unoccupied building in Rezé. A “symbol” depending on the interlocutor with whom Le Figaro entertained. The opportunity to challenge the town hall on “empty buildings” of the municipality which could be the subject of a potential “precarious occupation agreement” as has already been done in the past on this specific site.
“We no longer have any emergency accommodation available. They are already occupied, since 2018 for one and 2020 for the other, by exiled people or migrants from Eastern Europe.indicates Loïc Chusseau who points out that the City of Rezé already has the habit of working with the owners or promoters of unoccupied buildings to “optimize the use of housing”. In the case of the fifteen expelled migrants, he does not subscribe to this solution: “This way of doing things is not always beneficial because individuals may not be on the radar of social services.” He refers to the prefecture, which for its part says it wants a “adapted reorientation towards integration housing with regard to the profiles of the people”.
