Two policemen were injured in an interval of less than 12 hours in shootings in the New York neighborhood of the Bronx, events that have aroused the concern of the authorities because the attack on the first agent was an “assassination attempt.”
In a press conference on Saturday night, New York police director Dermot F. Shea explained that the first policeman was ambushed while in his patrol vehicle, along with another agent.
According to Shea, a man approached the patrol vehicle to ask for directions on how to get to a place and, suddenly, “without any provocation,” he took out a gun and fired several times.
The agent who was in the driver’s seat was hit by bullets and suffered injuries to the chin and neck, near the carotid artery, which supplies blood to the brain.
Immediately, the injured agent was taken to Lincoln hospital in the Bronx in serious but stable condition. Meanwhile, the New York police have arrested a suspect.
“It is a miracle that nothing worse has happened,” the New York police director said Saturday night.
However, hours later, a second agent was injured. Shortly before 8.00 local time on Sunday (13.00 GMT), a man broke into a police station in the Bronx, began shooting and wounded another officer in the arm, local media reported.
The governor of New York, Democrat Andrew Cuomo, regretted the attacks on agents on Twitter.
“I am horrified by the multiple attacks on the agents in the Bronx. The New York policemen risk their lives every day to keep us safe. These attacks are atrocious. Those responsible will be brought to justice and will be held accountable to the maximum weight allow the law, “he promised.
These attacks have had a great impact because, according to the New York police chief himself, they remember the death in December 2014 of Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos, who were killed in cold blood in a shooting while they were inside of his patrol in the district of Brooklyn.
His murder occurred in the context of massive protests in the US. of the “Black Lives Matter” movement (against the lives of blacks matter) against police brutality.
The author of that murder had links with black supremacist organizations and committed suicide after killing the agents.
