Worrying are the latest COVID-19 pandemic figures for South Florida: a positivity rate of nearly 10%, more than 7,000 cases in a day, nearly 1,500 hospitalizations and 77 deaths.
Dr. Dadilia Garcés, an epidemiologist and professor at Miami Dade College, says:
“We are going to start seeing higher numbers after December 31st. So these numbers have really been within the average of what we expected for December corresponding to the second wave ”.
Testing rates across the state have increased in recent days. This weekend, in a single day at Hard Rock Stadium a record number was reached: 4 thousand 37 exams. After the Christmas Eve and Christmas meetings, positive cases could increase considerably.
“My projection is that after December 31, the numbers are going to be much higher than last week and we can exceed 13,000 cases a day,” says Garcés.
At a time of a high rate of COVID-19 infections in South Florida, experts have a recommendation for those who participated in multi-family gatherings and dinners.
“Starting three days later, they have the PCR test for the coronavirus done, to be sure they are not infected. And if some of those members, who were in that multifamily meeting, are positive, we must comply with isolation and quarantine, the people who were in contact, ”says Garcés.
Apparently, on December 31, as experience has shown, many will meet again despite the risks. So, faced with the inevitable, a precaution.
“72 hours before, take the exam, if you plan to meet with a family group. In this way you are more sure that you are not infected and can meet with these people with greater peace of mind, ”says Garcés.
