Concern about Covid variant detected in Upper Manhattan

One of the variants of the coronavirus detected in New York could be resistant to some degree to the vaccine and to the antibody treatments.

The variant possibly originated in Washington Heights and has spread to other counties, according to Dr. Anthony Fauci, the White House adviser on medical issues.

This worries some New Yorkers.

“Well, there is a new variant because most of them without masks as they walk on the street. Not in business, because in business they don’t accept it without masks, ”said a neighbor.

This Monday, the working group against the coronavirus in Washington said that the new variant originated in November and had only occurred in 0.2 percent of cases and now reaches up to 28 percent.

And according to medical studies, it is possible that these cases started in patients suffering from diseases that affect the immune system. So they believe that the virus could mutate.

So Fauci urges people with these diseases to get vaccinated.

“Yes absolutely. It is not only important for their health but because in these groups the virus could mutate, ”said Fauci.

While the mayor of Blasio explained that the capacity of the tests will increase with the appearance of the variants.

The city’s chief health advisor, Dr Jay Varma, said that the population should not be alarmed by this new variant, but should continue with precautionary measures while all people are vaccinated.

“We should continue to take care of ourselves as we are until now and we hope that it will go down and that everything is fine … people should have a bit of awareness and we continue to take care,” said another neighbor.

This comes at a time when New York has increased the capacity to immunize with the arrival of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine that will inoculate 71 thousand people.

Among those now eligible for the vaccine are workers in food banks, hotels and workers in certain food delivery programs among others.

In addition, the city plans to open more vaccination centers, one of these in Co-op city.
