Conceição Pereira, trade unionist and co-founder of BE, passed away

Conceição Pereira, co-founder of the Bloco de Esquerda in Madeira and the first person to face this political project, passed away this morning, running for BE.

The news was advanced a few moments ago by Roberto Almada on his Facebook page.

Speaking to DIÁRIO, Roberto Almada speaks of a woman with arms who has fought for women’s rights all her life.

He recalls the political struggles in which he was involved, as well as the bodies he embraced. She was part of the direction of the Union of Offices, was founder of the Union of Teachers of Madeira, of which she remained associated until the end of her life, as well as of UMAR – Union of Women Alternative and Response.

In addition, she was a leader and activist at UDP (União Democrática Popular), of which she was a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Madeira between 1992 and 1996.

“She is a multifaceted woman who leaves a literary work. She did not like to be called a writer, as she always said that she never had this intention, but she left several works, most of them have to do with the fight for the rights of women, the defense of workers and the weakest and oppressed “, she recalls to the DIÁRIO Roberto Almada who says that we are facing “the loss of an intellectual and unionist” and of the most “solidary and generous” people he has ever met.

In 2013, and at the age of 77, she accepted to be a candidate for the São Vicente CM, by BE. Despite his age and health problems, “he did not shy away from giving his contribution”, stresses Roberto Almada, considering that Conceição Pereira was always “coherent and a true woman of causes”.

Conceição Pereira passed away at 84 nos.
