An overnight short circuit at a Con Edison power company substation in Brooklyn caused a brief but shocking loss of power across much of New York City early Friday morning.

ConEd explained that a failure in a high-voltage transmission line caused a drop in power.

“A high-voltage transmission line failure occurred at a Con Edison substation in Brooklyn at approximately 11:55 p.m. last night,” the power company said in a statement. “Customers may have experienced a drop or surge in power at that time. Crews are investigating and working to make any necessary repairs.”

Power was restored to all customers by 3 a.m., ConEd said. But the blackout caused a series of problems throughout New York City.

The Office of Emergency Management said it performed about 10 elevator rescues across the city.

Wegmans confirmed, through a spokesperson, that a security guard in Brooklyn was trapped in an elevator for about an hour before firefighters were able to extricate him.

Grand Central Terminal’s elevators and escalators were out of service around midnight due to a loss of power, but were back in operation at 3:30 a.m.

Metro lines 4 and 6 suffered delays in both directions early this Friday morning.

“Basically, [el equipo] shorted out, causing a large flash that was seen by some neighborhood residents,” said Con Edison New York President Matt Ketschke.

“There was a voltage drop, essentially people saw a flicker in their lights for a second before midnight, and then the voltage recovered and went back to normal,” he said.

The problem occurred at the Con Edison Farragut substation at John and Gold streets in Brooklyn.
