Microsoft is preparing to remind users of the version of Windows 8.1 that support will end on January 10, 2023, with notifications beginning next month.

Specifically, Windows 8 ended mainstream support on January 9, 2018, so customers using this version had until January 12, 2016 to migrate to Windows 8.1 and continue to use this version as part of an upgrade program. Extended Security (ESU).

Earlier this year, Microsoft announced that on January 10, 2023 will end support for this operating system version, as it will no longer provide technical assistance and software updates.

The interruption of that support does not mean that said update stops working, but that, as of that date, Windows 8.1 will stop receiving security updateswhich can increase users’ exposure to cyberattacks and other risks.

As reported by The Verge, Microsoft will begin to notify users of the end of Windows 8.1 starting next month, through a notification system similar to the one it implemented in 2019 with the closure of Windows 7.

This is when users will have to choose whether to upgrade their operating system or directly buy another computer or laptop, since many of these devices do not support the latest version of the tech giant’s operating system, Windows 11.
