Computer modeling of the release of water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant has shown that radioactive water will first go eastward to the center of the northwestern Pacific Ocean, reports news agency DEITA.RU. This was told by the candidate of physical and mathematical sciences, scientist of the Pacific Oceanological Institute of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences Maxim Budyansky.
According to him, over the past 12 years, he and his colleagues have been modeling this situation and have come to the conclusion that all polluted water will go east towards the coast of North America.
“According to all the data of the model and the scientific measurements that our colleagues carried out in the ocean, everything indicates that the water that drains from the ocean from Fukushima will go east. Why? Because the currents and the eddy system that are observed near the eastern coast of Japan will pick up polluted water and actively mix it in the ocean, transferring it to the east,” the scientist said.
At the same time, computer modeling over 12 years has shown that the penetration of polluted water into the Sea of Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk is unlikely. And the panic that has arisen is completely unfounded.
“The water will be taken up by the Kuroshio current, and it, like a powerful river, will carry everything towards North America. Moreover, even when it reaches the shores of America, it will be completely mixed. Because the ocean is a large system, let’s add long travel times, bottom topography, local mixing, and other factors. It turns out that by the time it reaches the mainland, everything will be at the background level, ”said the candidate of mathematical and physical sciences.
At the same time, he is sure that the Japanese will not pour extremely polluted water into the ocean, at least this water has stood in tanks for several years and was technically purified. Plus, several countries are constantly monitoring the water near Fukushima, which means that the excess of the background radiation would have been noticed long ago.
However, he advised local residents on the east coast of Japan, who live off the coastal fishery, to think:So they really need to be more careful and conduct dosimetry on an ongoing basis.».
Recall that on Thursday, August 24, the Japanese company TERCO, which is the operator of the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant, began dumping water into the ocean. China sharply opposed this step, accusing the Japanese of hiding technical documents on purified water, and China also banned the export of Japanese seafood. Doubts were also expressed by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova. The Japanese themselves say that they have purified the water to normal values, except for tritium, which they plan to dilute in sea water to a level 40 times lower than the established norms.
