Compulsory anticovid vaccination has not been contemplated for the general population, says Daniel Salas

Making vaccination against the new coronavirus mandatory in the general population has not been contemplated by the Government of the Republic.

This was recognized on Wednesday by the Minister of Health, Daniel Salas Peraza, when asked about this possibility by AmeliaRueda.com during the press conference on the national state of emergency for respiratory disease.

“We know that it has a much higher level of complexity. It has not been contemplated,” said the chief.

Salas Peraza explained that although the measure was implemented for health sector personnel in February and for public officials in October, this is possible because in those spaces it is possible to identify who was inoculated and who did not, as well as to take eventual sanctions.

“But that (requiring immunization) actually poses a much greater challenge for the entire population so it is not considered at the moment,” added the head.

Instead, the Executive Power bet on Wednesday to require from December 1 the complete vaccination scheme against covid-19 (through a digital certificate issued by the health portfolio) for all citizens over 12 years of age who intend to enjoy 12 economic activities:

  • Restaurants, sodas, cafeterias and food courts (food trucks and food courts).
  • Bars and casinos.
  • General stores and shopping centers.
  • Museums
  • Fitness center.
  • Hotels, cabins or accommodation establishments. Spas.
  • Activities, organizations or congregations in places of worship.
  • Event rooms for business, academic or social activities.
  • Adventure trip.
  • Theaters, cinemas, art and dance academies and artistic activity establishments.
  • Sports activities establishments.

The minister stressed that all these activities are considered “leisure” and ruled out that similar measures were to be implemented to access basic services, such as supermarkets. Similarly, he emphatically denied that this provision will be applied in the elections of February 6, 2022, as a requirement to be able to vote.

“It is important to clarify that all the activities that will require the vaccination certificate are leisure activities. Admission to a hospital, a supermarket, admission to things that are for basic sustainability or basic needs will not require the certificate of vaccination. We are talking above all about leisure activities, such as concerts, theaters, cinemas, malls… things like that, then in that sense vaccination would never be made mandatory for elections, since it is never a leisure activity, “said the leader.
