Last week, six officials from the Municipality of La Florida, headed by Mayor Rodolfo Carter, were finally notified of the start of a trial of accounts by the Court of Accounts of the Comptroller General of the Republic (CGR), due to several administrative and financial irregularities that the supervisory body detected in a tough 2021 report, which audited the financial management of the commune between 2019 and 2020.
The process of this trial of accounts began in October of last year due to the report of the comptroller body, but it was not until a few days ago that the Court of Auditors processed the notifications. The audit established that -during the mentioned period- the municipality could not prove the disbursement of $148 million in recreational activities for the commune, in addition to reproaching the delivery of food boxes, in the midst of the pandemic, to people with invalid and deceased RUTs.
The beginning of the processing of this accounts procedure was informed exclusively by the bewilderment at the end of March of this year, just one day before Janett Fernández, one of the officials on trial and right-hand man of the mayor of Florida for years, took over as new general secretary of the Municipal Corporation (COMUDEF)and that Carter himself assured in a municipal council – when questioned about this appointment – that they had not been notified of any procedure against his former administrator.
Among municipal officials and councilors there was confusion, because although the CGR report was clear in reproaching the irregularities, it was only a week ago the bewilderment was able to corroborate through the Court of Auditors, an entity rooted in the Comptroller’s Office but which stands with autonomy and characteristics of a jurisdictional entity, the formal notification to those involved.
