The Reinoldi comprehensive school in Westerfilde inaugurated its new extension with a big school festival on Friday, October 4th. The construction, which cost a total of 27.7 million euros, was celebrated by Mayor Thomas Westphal and the school community.

The new building, which is already nicknamed the “Westerfilder Tower” due to its height, comprises four full floors and offers, among other things, 20 new classrooms as well as special rooms for art and music, the city of Dortmund informs in a press release. The top floor is reserved for the upper level of the comprehensive school. It will start its first run in the 2027/28 school year. On the floors below, school operations are already in full swing.

Thomas Westphal said: “I am here today to congratulate you on this new building. I think we’ve created something really great together! And I hope you really enjoy it.” Headmaster Christian Pätzold and four students had previously presented the modern building to him.

The need for the extension arose from the growing need for school places. Since its founding in August 2012 and the change to a four-class comprehensive school in the 2021/22 school year, it has become clear that additional capacity is needed.

The construction time was just 13 months, from February 2023 until the keys were handed over in March 2024. “A high-quality, modern building that looks good and was available quickly – the new building has all of that,” said Dortmund’s head of the building department, Arnulf Rybicki. Not only the room concept, but also everything else is very modern: school furniture and technology, of course, there is a green facade on 184 square meters, a green roof with a photovoltaic system (53 kWp/kilowatt peak) and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery. The building looks very stylish with its many windows and clear lines.
