Compost collection begins throughout the city

Starting this Sunday, the curbside composting program is starting to be implemented in the five cities.

Previously, compost pickup was only available to residents of Brooklyn and Queens.

The program is expanding to Manhattan, Staten Island and The Bronx.

All private residences must participate, and buildings with more than four units must provide storage space for collection containers.

Compost will be collected on regular recycling days throughout the year.

Starting in April next year, the City will fine people who do not separate their compost.

Portable materials collected through the program will be sold to designers, delivered to home gardeners or converted into energy.

Local officials say the composting program will help solve the rat problem.

Here is a list of some items that are good for composting:

Fruit and vegetable leftovers, meat and bones, dairy products, paper with leftover food and pizza boxes, among others.

It must be noted that there are also materials that are not good for composting.

These include diapers, personal hygiene products, animal waste, non-paper packaging, Styrofoam products; as well as metal, glass, plastic or cardboard.
