Prague – The Czech composer and music teacher Vadim Petrov died at the age of 88 after a long illness. The agency CTK reported on Monday evening, citing the artist’s son. Petrov gained greater fame with the soundtrack for the cartoon series “The Little Mole”, for which he was responsible from 1974 onwards. –

Petrov is said to have composed a total of around 1,400 pieces, from symphonies to chamber music to songs and chansons. Petrov was born in Prague in 1932 to a Russian émigré and a Czech woman. He received violin and piano lessons at a young age and later studied composition at the music college AMU in his hometown. He devoted himself particularly to the popular Slavonic art of song, which was to shape his style. “Czech musical culture has its deep historical roots, its own melodies and poetry,” he once said in an interview with the newspaper “Pravo”.

In addition to his creative work, Petrov was involved as a teacher and founder of a music school for ambitious amateur musicians in Prague, which he directed until 1970. From 1976 to 1992 he taught as a professor at the Prague Conservatory. He has received national and international awards for his film music.
