Joaquín Orellana studied violin and composition at the National Conservatory of Music of Guatemala and was a fellow of the Latin American Center for Musical Studies, at the Torcuato Di Tella Institute of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

In 1968 he returned to Guatemala to make a series of instruments (created by himself), with analog technology, to achieve an electroacoustic sound. Through the sounds of his country he was able to find his style.
