VILNIUS Australia, Indonesia’s neighbour, is hesitant about a proposal to support the military Ukraine with used F-18 fighter jets. According to Canberra, the move to supply fighter jets to fight Russia is a tricky thing.

Australia ramped up its support for Ukraine on the sidelines of a NATO summit in Lithuania last night, pledging to deliver an additional fleet of 30 Bushmaster armored infantry vehicles at a cost of $67 million.

But Kyiv also asked Australia about the condition of dozens of retired F-18 fighter jets, which could provide a major boost to the strength of the Russian Air Force.

Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles said conversations about supplying the fighter planes to Ukraine were ongoing, but much more complicated than other forms of military support.

“Airplanes become a much more complicated question,” he told ABCwhich was launched Thursday (13/7/2023).

“The situation around the plane is quite complicated, but we will continue to have talks with Ukraine on that,” he said.

“What we give, and what we do, has to be practical and needs to make a difference,” he said.

Ukraine’s ambassador to Australia Vasyl Myroshnychenko said in June that Kyiv was interested in former Royal Australian Air Force F-18s.
