Compliance with Digital Markets Act: New European Rules for Big Tech Companies

Reynders will also have to ensure that those companies comply with the Digital Markets Act. These are the new European rules for big tech companies that have only just been approved. For example, those companies will have to ask users of their platforms for permission to monitor their internet behavior and to sell it on to advertisers. They will also no longer be allowed to favor their own services, for example a smartphone manufacturer that supplies its own apps already installed.

Those companies will have until March next year to do so. If they don’t get their affairs in order, there will again be a threat of huge fines. These can be up to 10 percent of the global turnover of such a company and even 20 percent in the case of repeated violations.
