After a quick opening of the 13th stage, it seemed that calm had returned in the peloton, but at a little less than 90 kilometers from the finish there was a crash in the peloton. Romain Bardet and Nairo Quintana went down, but were able to continue.
The biggest victim of the strange fall was Bauke Mollema. The Dutchman from Trek-Segafredo ended up in the canal and had to give up.
“His face is bloody and especially his right side appears to be hit: his arm, his wrist and maybe also his shoulder. He is very carefully placed on the stretcher”, said Carl Berteele, our man on the motorcycle.

Ultimately, the damage turned out to be considerable for Mollema. His team announces that the Dutchman has sustained a complex fracture in his left wrist, in which the ulna, the radius and a carpal bone have also been broken.
“Bauke will be operated on, but we still have to see when”, said Trek-Segafredo team doctor Nino Daniele. “We hope soon. We will also investigate him further. He is now pain free.”
Mollema gave up crying, according to bystanders. He was initially transported by ambulance. Finally, a helicopter took him to a hospital in Clermont-Ferrand.
