“Completely independent” Czech Republic resumed purchasing Russian gas: EADaily

The Czech Republic has resumed purchases of Russian natural gas after the country completely abandoned supplies from the Russian Federation in April. This was announced the day before, on November 25, by the Minister of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic, Josef Sikela, on social networks.

The head of the department hastened to point out that Prague has already stockpiled supplies for the winter, so it does not need additional purchases of Russian blue fuel.

“Despite this, this week we learned from the Energy Regulatory Authority’s monthly report that some trading companies have begun supplying us with gas from Russia since October,” – Sikela noted.

The head of the Czech Ministry of Industry and Trade recalled that gas exports from the Russian Federation to the European Union are not subject to sanctions due to the fact that some countries still cannot do without it.

Despite information about the resumption of purchases, the share of Russian gas in the total volume of supplies to the Czech Republic at the end of October was 1.2%, he informed, arguing that Prague is completely independent of gas from Russia.

The Czech gas storage facilities are 99.9% full and currently contain 3.455 billion cubic meters of gas, Sikela said on October 19, emphasizing then that “this is a new record.” “As for the coming winter, the Czech Republic has enough gas to meet its consumption,” he asserted. At the same time, the minister admitted that lower domestic gas consumption due to favorable weather also contributed to savings.
