Complete vaccine recipients are less likely to experience symptoms long Covid.
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Long Covid is a symptom of prolonged illness suffered by survivor patients even though they have been declared cured of Covid-19. According to data from the Covid-19 survivor community, Covid Survivor Indonesia (CSI), nearly 70 percent of survivors experience long Covid.
Now, scientists have determined the extent vaccination reduce someone’s risk long Covid compared to someone who was not vaccinated. Experts also indicate which age groups are most at risk and which are least at risk of developing the condition.
A data review of 15 UK and international studies showed people who had been given two doses vaccine Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca, possibility to develop long Covid was only 50 percent compared to those who received a dose of the vaccine or were not vaccinated.
Four of 15 studies analyzed the effect of vaccination on those who were already symptomatic long Covid. These studies show that patients with Covid-19 report Covid-19 symptoms improved after vaccination.
Then three studies looked at groups who were not vaccinated and had long had Covid-19 and compared them with those who were vaccinated. The data here suggest that those who are vaccinated are less likely to report symptoms long Covid after vaccination compared to those who chose to remain unvaccinated.
Overall, patients who reported symptoms of long Covid and vaccinated are more likely to report improving symptoms than those who are not vaccinated. The data contained in these 15 studies not only shows how vaccination can improve symptoms long Covid, but also provides a high level of protection against developing symptoms.
Dr Mary Ramsay, head of vaccinations at UKHSA (British Health Safety Agency), said the study adds to the potential benefits of receiving a full Covid-19 vaccination.
“For most people, symptoms long Covid is felt not too long and recovers from time to time. But if you experience any unusual symptoms especially for more than four weeks after infection, you should consider contacting a doctor,” Ramsay said. ExpressThursday (17/2/2022).
Currently researchers in the US are trying to help those experiencing long Covid by developing treatments to relieve its symptoms. They are determining whether antihistamines, drugs commonly used to relieve allergy symptoms, can be used to relieve symptoms long Covid.
The study was launched after two patients started taking it and found their symptoms improved. Even so, the experience of two individuals is not enough to prove whether antihistamines can overcome long Covid or not. Therefore, further research is needed to prove this.
