Before the summer holidays, the municipal council unanimously approved the total credit for the renovation of the town hall complex. The building permit was granted in mid-July, so that construction work can start in October 2024 and should be completed by December 2025.
The town hall complex between the National Bank and Bürkliplatz is being designed to be future-proof. In addition to the new building for the kiosk, the tree population on the town hall complex will be expanded in stages. Around 20 dying trees will be replaced. With connected tree pits, the city will create better growth conditions and tree protection during events will also be improved. In addition, as a further measure to reduce heat, rainwater will be able to seep away more easily in the future. Round benches, green tree pits and an optimized market and event infrastructure for electricity and water will also enhance the complex and enable modern market operations after the renovation. The historic music pavilion will remain, but cannot be used during the construction period.
Market operations and heat reduction measures in harmony
In close consultation with the market traders (weekly market and flea market), an amicable solution was found in recent weeks that takes both the market operation and the measures to reduce heat into account. The alternative locations during the construction work have been determined: The markets will take place temporarily in the Fraumünster and side streets as well as on the Münsterhof between mid-January and mid-November 2025. Once the construction work is completed, the markets will return to the Stadthaus complex.
Kiosk with modern infrastructure
The new kiosk with catering area will accommodate, among other things, the various ewz distribution booths that are currently scattered among the hedges. There will also be space for the market police counters, which were previously housed in an office container, and two ZüriWCs. The wood for the new building comes from the Zurich city forest. The kiosk will continue to be a meeting place in the future, allow for a high degree of flexibility in use and continue to offer low-threshold catering options for the general public.
