133. Velká Pardubická 2023 – how to qualify, qualification conditions
completion of at least one qualifying race and its completion in 5th place or with a maximum distance of 20 seconds from the winner completion of races in the Crystal Cup or steeplechase, steeplechase cross country or cross country with a length of min. 4,800 meters in Ireland, England, France or Italy (from October 9, 2022), the winner of the last year of the VP has the right to start without qualification
Certain conditions must also be observed riders/jockeysagain it is enough to fulfill at least one of the points:

Originally, a total of 21 horses registered for Velká Pardubická 2023 – but three were eventually eliminated (Gap Pierji, Paris Eiffel, Polinuit), and so the main race 18 horses will participate. Unlike last year, there are also foreign horses among them (Jet Fighter, Alpha Male, Kaiserwalzer, Royal Gino).
The youngest is the 6-year-old gelding Jet Fighter, while the oldest are the experienced 12-year-old geldings Alpha Male, Lombargini, Star and Talent. One stallion (Royal Gino) and a mare (Santa Klara) also start.
Of very famous jockeys last year’s is missing winner of the Velká Pardubická and two-time champion Lukáš Matuský, and Josef Bartoš, who won the Pardubická even three times already. Both were injured in Merano, Italy, and their health does not allow them to ride this year. Jan Faltejsek, Jan Kratochvíl and Ondřej Velek also fell, fortunately without major consequences.

Group of favorites – Sacamiro, Argano, Lodgian Whistle, Mr Spex, Talent, Godfrey
It ranks among this year’s biggest favorites Sacamiro, a 10-year-old gelding, ridden by the experienced Jan Faltejsek, a five-time winner of the VP. In total, this year, trainer Eva Petříková’s gelding rode twice in the qualifications – first he was second, then he dominated the third round. He rode Pardubická for the first time last year and immediately finished in 3rd place.
Argan he is one year younger than trainer Martin Liška, who has been riding him himself since 2019 and will be in his saddle this time as well. This year we could see this horse in two qualifiers and he did very well – he was third in the first one, he won the last one in September. He drove the great Pardubice for the first time last year and took a solid 5th place, this year he can think even higher.
It is also among the favorites Lodgian Whistle, who is trained by none other than the legendary Josef Váňa senior. This year it is his only horse of this legendary jockey. This 10-year-old gelding appeared in three races this year and won two, one of which was a qualification for the VP. At that time, Ondřej Velek was in the saddle and he got the confidence even for the main race. Lodgian Whistle already he drove one from Pardubicefinished seventh three years ago.
9-year-old gelding Mr Spex is the defending champion from last year. He hasn’t been very convincing this year, as he only finished eighth in the third qualification – it was his only race. This time it will not be the injured Lukáš Matuský, but Patrick Mullins, so we will see how they sit down. Mr Spex will go to the VP for the third time, two years ago he took third place.
The ageless 12-year-old gelding also belongs to the wider circle of favourites Talent, it will be his fourth Great Pardubice in his career. It is already the third time that he is saddled by Pavel Složil Jr., who achieves great results with him – three years ago they were fourth together at the VP, in 2021 they won and last year they took second place. This year Talenta was again driven only by Složil, the best was second in the third qualification.
A seven-year-old gelding Godfreye he is waiting for a big premiere in Pardubice, but he has already done a lot at this racetrack. Most often with Daniel Vyhnálek, who also saddles this 7-year-old gelding for this year’s VP. This year, coach Daniel Török’s charge has two second places, one in the first qualification.

They can surprise – Player, Santa Klara, Star, Stuke, Imphal, Royal Gino
Connection Player and Marcel Novák, this has been true since 2016. This jockey has been on the VP in all four of Player’s previous starts, this year he will ride it for the fifth time. Coach Lenka Kvapilová’s mentee finished only one of the three races this year, the fourth place in the third qualification guaranteed him another participation in Pardubice. The 11-year-old gelding was already second and fourth at the VP, he can surprise this year as well.
The only mare at the start, Santa Clara coach Josef Váni jnójri, this year she will experience a big premiere at the VP, until now she only competed abroad. The eight-year-old bay filly has plenty of experience, for example last year she collected 5 victories from nine starts, she already won once this year. It was in the saddle with Jan Kratochvíl, who will also ride her to the VP. She qualified thanks to the third place in the second qualification, when she was driven by the now injured Josef Bartoš.
He is another highly experienced horse Star, 12-year-old gelding of trainer Hana Kabelková. We could already see him at two Velké Pardubice, last year unfortunately he fell on Taxis and did not finish. He has completed three races so far this year, taking third and second place in the qualifiers. It will be driven by Marek Stromský, the eternal underdog of the VP. Will he break the “curse” with the veteran Star?
9 year old redhead Stuke he hadn’t driven Pardubice yet, he was supposed to experience it for the first time with Lukáš Matuský, the defending champion from last year. Horses of trainer Radek Holčák, who has already completed 5 races this year, but in the end Benoit Claudic will ride. He qualified only at the last moment, thanks to the third place in the last qualification. Ondřej Velek rode it there.
Imphal he already experienced the atmosphere of Velká Pardubická, but a year ago he did not finish with jockey Jaroslav Myška due to a fall on Taxis. It was with this jockey that the 10-year-old gelding rode a lot, including the first qualification, from which he qualified with a second place. But Ludovic Solignac was given the trust for the race, because Myška ends up riding a different horse.
He is one of four horses from foreign stables Royal Gino, a 10-year-old white gelding of Slovak trainer Marián Štangel. So far, he has never presented himself at Pardubice, which cannot be said about his jockey Jan Odložil, who, on the other hand, has a lot of them on his account. It was Odložil who won the April race in Bratislava on this horse, he got to the VP thanks to the fourth place in the last qualification. However, Marcel Novák drove him there.

Outsideři – Zataro, Kaiserwalzer, Lombargini, Dulcar De Sivola, Jet Fighter, Alpha Male
10 year old bay Zataro he is the first in our group of outsiders. He has only 14 races in his career and won the only one five years ago, he hasn’t raced Pardubice yet. He got into it thanks to a very tight 5th place in the third qualification, driven by Petr Tůma. However, 36-year-old Jakub Kocman, who rode Sacamira last year, received the trust of coach Stanislav Popelka for VP.
Name Kaiserwalzer fans of Velká Pardubická may already know, as it will be the third race at 6900 meters for the 10-year-old gelding. For the first time, it will be driven by someone other than Patrick Mullins, specifically the highly experienced Jaroslav Myška. The second horse of the Slovak breed, namely trainer Jaroslav Brečka, secured his place at the VP thanks to the fourth place in the first qualification of the year.
Among the most experienced are Pawnshop, 12-year-old bay gelding of trainer Stanislav Popelka. Like Kaiserwalzer, he too would like to shine in his third participation in Pardubice, last year he was quite unexpectedly in 6th place with Jan Odložil in the saddle. This year, however, he has not had good results so far, which is why he ranks among the outsiders. Adam Čmiel was originally supposed to drive it, but it ended up being James Best.
A ten-year-old gelding Dulcar De Sivola and Josef Borč know each other well, they have been racing together under the supervision of coach Vendula Jirčáková for practically their entire careers. This horse will try the big Pardubice for the fifth time in his career, the maximum so far is 7th place from last year. However, this year’s form is not much so far, which is why he is one of the biggest outsiders.
He is the youngest in the entire starting list Jet Fighter Irish coach Peter Maher. The 6-year-old gelding is used to competing abroad, this year he already managed 7 races – the last one was the last fourth qualification for the VP. He was ridden by Petr Tůma and took 7th place with him, but Irish jockey Sean Francis O’Keeffe will be in the saddle in the race.
The biggest outsider in this year’s Great Pardubice is Alpha Male, who is also coached by Peter Maher from Ireland. The experienced 12-year-old gelding showed himself in the Czech Republic only during the last qualification, Marek Stromský took 8th place on him. But in the end Petr Tůma got the trust.
