From January 1, 2024, complementary solidarity health insurance arrives in Mayotte. It helps with health expenses not covered by health insurance, subject to means testing. The 101st French department has only 265 doctors for more than 310,000 inhabitants, 77% of whom live below the poverty line, often refusing too expensive care.
This supplement can therefore contribute to better equality between the Mahorais and their compatriots, since it makes it possible not to advance the costs of the doctor or pharmacy. The Mayotte social security fund (CSSM) estimates that “139,000 policyholders will be able to benefit from it, or 44.9% of the population of Mayotte.” No action is necessary, and a simulator is available on the CSSM website.
This measure unfortunately does not apply to foreigners present on the territory, in a situation of poor health. While state medical aid is under debate at the national level, it has never been applied in Mayotte.
