Whether you are retired, self-employed or public service employee, finding complementary health insurance at the right price/quality ratio can be complicated. According to our analyses, the place of residence can have a strong impact on the cost of a contribution.

About 1 out of 2 French people do not benefit from a collective supplementary health contract thanks to their employer. It can be difficult to find an offer that meets your needs without costing too much. This is particularly the case for retirees, for whom the premiums are often very high compared to the rest of the population. The situation is hardly improving this year: we have seen a 3.1% tariff increase in 2021. An unprecedented increase.
Individual contracts vary according to many criteria, the best known of which is age. But many health supplements also take place of residence into account.
According to our analyzes from our comparator of mutual health insurance, only 25% of service providers offer relatively homogeneous prices from one department to another. Conversely, 30% strongly vary their prices depending on the city of residence. One of our readers noticed this when she moved from Eure to Bouches-du-Rhône: her premium increased by €20. The calculations of our comparator confirm this observation. The average contribution is €147 per month. In Nantes, we pay 100 € less. In Marseille or Paris, it’s 100 € more.
Several factors explain these discrepancies. Mutual insurance contracts take into account the consumption of care and excess fees practiced in the department. In areas where the population sees the doctor more often, the contracts will therefore be more expensive. This is the case of Bouches-du-Rhône and Paris. Conversely, the departments benefiting from the local health insurance scheme of Alsace-Moselle pay lower premiums, because the community offers better reimbursements.
