Complaints from drivers about high fuel prices

Months ago, Iván Aguilar filled the tank of his truck with $200 worth of diesel.

Now, that amount is not enough to buy half the fuel.

“Diesel is very expensive. Not this anymore, it can’t be done anymore. It’s too much,” Aguilar said.

Iván, a father of two who makes a living transporting eggs and dairy products in a truck, says his bosses constantly complain about the amount of money they have to spend on diesel every day.

To save costs, they ask you to lower the level of the refrigerator to a minimum.

“I use two motors, one to cool the ‘truck’ and the other for the lorry. And then, how are you going to save diesel like that? That’s impossible.”

This Wednesday, Triple A registered the highest price of fuel in the history of the state of New York. The cost of diesel is $6.53, one dollar and twenty-nine cents more than last month.

The rise in the price of fuel is a problem that has been affecting New Yorkers since the end of February, when the war between Russia and Ukraine began.

And according to Monica Ramírez, representative of Triple A, the rise in prices is and will be a trend as long as the conflict continues.

“We will not know where the conflict, the sanctions, and how high the price of oil will go,” Ramírez said.

Gasoline prices also continue to rise.

This Wednesday, the average cost in New York for a gallon of regular gasoline is $4.86, an increase of sixty-eight cents compared to April and one dollar and eighty cents higher than May 2021.

This is something that worries city drivers, especially taxi drivers.

“Prices are unbearable, they are higher every day and all income is. Gasoline goes up, and revenue stays the same,” said Johnny Lopez, a Sunset Park taxi driver.

Despite high fuel costs, Triple A predicts that vehicle travel on Memorial Day holiday weekend will return to pre-pandemic levels.
