Mr. Bakoyiannis emphasized the complete disrespect of our vulnerable fellow citizens by the Municipal Authority, underlining the effects of indifference on the lives of the weaker groups.
Multipurpose Homeless Center: This particular structure, which dealt holistically with the problem of homelessness in the capital, is now in a state of decline. Mr. Bakoyiannis described a center understaffed, without adequate security and cleanliness. The Day Center operates with reduced staff, while the Dormitory is closed. In the Hostel, the situation is chaotic with thefts, bed bug infestations and inadequate hygiene conditions. The remaining workers are working hard, but a lack of resources and staff makes it difficult to provide even basic services.
Battered Women’s Hostel: The hostel that offered refuge to abused women is closing during the summer due to a lack of staff. This results in the transfer of female guests to other places, exacerbating the sense of insecurity they experience. This closure also means that new incidents cannot be accommodated, leaving many victims of violence without support. Mr. Bakoyiannis commented ironically: “Really, women are not abused in August?”
Center for Combating Gender-Based Violence and Multiple Discrimination: At a time when gender-based violence and discrimination have increased, the Municipality of Athens has decided to close the only center dedicated to victims of violence and discrimination. This decision is accompanied by the dismissal of specialized staff, with the argument of the evolution of the center into a Rape Crisis Center. Mr. Bakoyannis raised questions about how the needs of the victims will be met and why existing employees are being fired.
Mr. Bakoyiannis accused the Municipal Authority of indifference and lack of a plan, calling on the Mayor to leave the impressive appearances and deal seriously with the essential problems of the city. He criticized the indifference to the needs of our most vulnerable fellow citizens, stressing the need for immediate and meaningful intervention.
