Complaints and Speculations Surround YouTube Service Failure in Russia

Users of YouTube video hosting complained about the failure of the service.

According to data Downradar, an increase in complaints about YouTube began after 16:00 Moscow time – mainly from Moscow and the Moscow region. In addition, problems with the service were reported in St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Voronezh, Krasnodar, Kazan, as well as in Belarus, Ukraine and Kazakhstan.

Most of the complaints were related to problems with downloading videos. A number of users noted that YouTube does not work on the MTS network.

Forbes source in one of the Russian operators declaredthat the problem occurred on the side of Roskomnadzor. According to the interlocutor of the publication, we can talk about a malfunction in the operation of technical means of countering threats (TSPU) or tests of YouTube blocking services.

In Roskomnadzor itself declared RBC that the failures are in no way connected with the actions of the department.

After the start of a full-scale invasion of Russian troops into Ukraine in 2022, the possible blocking of YouTube was widely discussed in Russia amid the ban on Facebook and Instagram. Despite the fact that video hosting blocked the channels of many Russian government agencies and the media, it remained available in Russia.

At the end of August, Rostelecom tested an “internal YouTube access service”. Experts suggested that the company tested the content filtering system.
