Complaint against FIFA to the EU Commission by FIFPRO and La Liga –

The Union of European Leagues, FIFPRO Europe and Spain’s La Liga, have filed a complaint with the EU Commission against FIFA for abuse of a dominant position in the enforcement of the 2025-2026 international competition schedule, with particular reference to the 2025 Club World Cup and the FIFA World Cup. Cup of 2026.

“The oversaturated international football calendar puts the safety and health of players at risk and threatens the financial and social viability of important national competitions that have been valued for generations by fans in Europe and around the world,” the leagues and the FIFPRO. They also complain about their lack of involvement in decisions about the program and accuse FIFA of abusing its “governmental” power to promote its own commercial interests.

Recent European jurisprudence – including the latest decisions of the European Court of Justice in the European Super League and Lassana Diarra cases – “clarifies that, due to the conflict of interest, FIFA must exercise its regulatory functions with transparency, objectivity and impartiality”.

Finally, the European leagues and FIFPRO say they are ready to cooperate with Brussels and the relevant institutions.
