Mexico City. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador confirmed that this Thursday they will present Mexico’s complaint before the International Court of Justice related to the assault by Ecuadorian security forces on the Mexican embassy in that country, which occurred last Friday, April 5. He anticipated that the complaint will be disseminated at his conference this Thursday.
Regarding the resolution approved this morning by the Organization of American States by 29 votes in favor, one abstention from El Salvador and one vote against from Ecuador, López Obrador considered it to be “very good.”
He reported that he has been speaking with some leaders, remembering the telephone conversation he had with his Brazilian counterpart, Luis Inazio Lula da Silva this Tuesday afternoon.
During his conference, he explained that during the cabinet meeting this morning the legal appeal that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will present before the international justice body was analyzed. Some details will be analyzed, which is why it was determined that instead of presenting it today, it will be until tomorrow.
López Obrador acknowledged that around the Mexico-Ecuador conflict there have been many displays of solidarity in Mexico and abroad. “Our people condemn this violation of our sovereignty. The vast majority of Mexicans do not agree with the authoritarian procedure of the government of Ecuador. This can be seen independently of some elements, differences, nuances. It is condemned in almost all cases. Mexicans this authoritarian procedure that violates our sovereignty and international law.
The president highlighted that at the international level, even the secretary general of the Organization of American States (“even with what the OAS means”), Luis Almagro – “who has had conservative positions” – has condemned the act.
“The truth is unjustifiable, you cannot justify the unjustifiable.” Even López Obrador ordered Almagro’s message to be broadcast on the screen in the extraordinary session of the OAS held yesterday.
He mentioned that even the Argentine government itself expressed its rejection of authoritarianism at the assault on our embassy. All the representatives in the OAS condemned the fact which contrasted, he said, with the position of the representative of Ecuador, vice chancellor, proposing that international law be modified so that it does not know about asylum and embassies are not protected.
The president commented that he sent the video taken from inside the Mexican embassy in Ecuador to the president of the United States, Joe Biden, because perhaps he was not fully aware of what happened last week and that is why his government had had such an ambiguous position. and lukewarm in the face of this conflict.
“We appreciate President Biden’s attitude because he agreed to rectify in the sense of making a more forceful statement and he did so through his main advisor in the White House on security matters,” added López Obrador, who noted that they are waiting for a similar rectification. of the Canadian government although, he acknowledged, they are free to take the position they consider appropriate.
Later, the president said that they will continue to honor the embassy personnel who were in Quito and considered that they would be candidates to obtain the Belisario Domínguez medal.
He specified that regarding the officials of the Ecuadorian embassy in Mexico, he said that although there is no ambassador designated by them, “the instruction was that they would be respected, that there should be no bad treatment of anyone and not to mistreat our Ecuadorian brothers. who live in Mexico, who for some reason are visiting Mexico. We are brother people, it is a different kind of circumstance, they are not responsible, they are poorly made decisions at the top of the government of their country, but one thing is the people and governments are another thing.”
-Will you remain in Mexico?
-I don’t know if it remains, but if they decide they can stay. doctor is a hospitable country, that we can live together, we are supporters of universal brotherhood, we have a tradition of decades, of centuries, of guaranteeing the right of asylum.
He cited examples that prove this Mexican diplomatic tradition: “from the persecution of the Jewish community, Mexico protected that community, with the Spanish civil war it also protected them, during the government of Lázaro Cárdenas. The refuge that was given because he was threatened with death to Leon Trotsky in later years.
“When the OAS, under the influence of the United States, decides to expel Cuba, the only country that opposes it is Mexico, the moments of the dictatorships that caused so much damage in Latin America, even Ecuador, many refugees lived, they are part of Mexico, it is like “the second homeland of many Latin Americans”.
Therefore, he considered that this explains the solidarity response of the international community because Mexico is an exemplary country in the application of protection and asylum.
