Competition Heats Up in Indonesia’s Hybrid Car Market: Toyota vs. Mitsubishi

Jakarta

Mitsubishi Motors Thailand has introduced the Xpander Hybrid, with selling prices starting at 912,000 Bath or the equivalent of IDR 405 million. As if not wanting to be outdone, Toyota-Astra Motor has confirmed that it will introduce a new hybrid which is suspected to be the Avanza Hybrid. But is it really like that?

Marketing Director of PT Toyota Astra Motor, Anton Jimmi Suwandy, during the Toyota 2024 media gathering, Friday (2/2/2024), gave his answer.

“We develop everything, whether CBU or local production. We study all the potential that exists in Indonesia. Because our target has only reached 11 percent of total sales, we want to answer the challenge to be even bigger, whether 13 percent or 15 percent, whatever segment “We see the potential, we will definitely study it. We’ll wait for the playing date, because everything is still being prepared,” said Anton.

So is it true that Toyota’s latest hybrid model was born to ward off the Mitsubishi Xpander Hybrid?

“In anticipation of the Mitsubishi “Then there is the Honda CR-V hybrid, so we are very happy that many hybrid products have been launched by other brands,” said Anton.

After 2 years, the Indonesian people finally received a special Eid gift in 2022, with the issuance of government permission to travel home. “Because usually when there is a hybrid variant, the hybrid is chosen compared to the petrol variant. So the trend is already in that direction, so we are confident. But to enter a more competitive segment, we need time to study and perhaps discuss with the government who I know it can be used as a subsidy,” Anton added.

Wow, it’s getting interesting to watch the competition for hybrid cars in Indonesia.
