All victims of sexual abuse by the Spanish Catholic Church will receive compensation. This was announced at the bishops’ conference in the country.

Victims whose perpetrator has died or whose case has expired are also entitled to compensation. The bishops thus return to an earlier position on the compensation scheme, in which no payment was made in those cases.

In principle, the money must be paid by the perpetrator. If he or she has died, the institution to which the perpetrator was affiliated must pay out the compensation.

1 in 200 victims

Last month, a study by the Spanish Ombudsman for Human Rights revealed that more than 1 in 200 Spaniards had been victims of sexual abuse within the Roman Catholic Church. 65 percent of them are men.

Since 1940, more than 200,000 minors within the Spanish Catholic Church are said to have been victims of sexual abuse by a priest or other church employee, such as teachers at church institutions.
