senegal Announces Comprehensive Support Measures for Ex-Prisoners and Victims of Recent Unrest
in a meaningful move to address the aftermath of events that shook Senegal between 2021 and 2024, the Minister of Family and Solidarity, maïmouna Dièye, unveiled a series of new measures aimed at supporting ex-prisoners and other victims. These initiatives, announced this Friday, include financial aid, social programs, and medical care, marking a pivotal step toward healing and reconciliation.
Financial Support and Social Programs
The government has pledged 10 million CFA francs to each family of individuals who lost their lives during the unrest. Additionally, minor orphans will be granted the status of “pupils of the nation,” ensuring their access to education and other state benefits. Families will also be enrolled in various government social programs, such as family security scholarships, universal health coverage, and equal opportunities initiatives.
To further empower affected individuals, the state will facilitate access to funding through mechanisms like the General Delegation for Fast Entrepreneurship for Women and Young People (DER/FJ), the National Credit Fund for Women, and the National Fund for the Promotion of Female Entrepreneurship.
Medical and Psychosocial Care
The Minister emphasized the importance of medical and psychosocial care for ex-prisoners and other victims who were injured or fell ill as a direct result of the events. “This care is based on a medical file established by health structures. The members of their families can also benefit from it,” she stated in a note.
Lump Sum Allowance
A lump sum allowance of 500,000 CFA francs has been allocated to all individuals listed in the database established by the National Agency of Statistics and Demography (ANSD). This database was created in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice, police sources, victim representatives, and civil society organizations.
