Compensation Claims for Squid Game: The Challenge Injuries

The two are represented by Express Solicitors, a British law firm that specializes in these types of claims. The office in question, which only receives a reward if compensation is actually paid, has now sent an official request for compensation to Studio Lambert, the production house that acts as co-producer for the show.

Squid Game: The Challenge is a derivative of the worldwide television hit Squid Game, a Korean fiction series in which a group of adults risk their lives to play children’s games in the hope of winning a huge prize pool. That concept has now been turned into a real reality program, with the only difference that candidates who lose do not pay for it with their lives.

Injuries

But there were still casualties. More specifically during the game ‘Red Light, Green Light’, the international name for the well-known game ‘1, 2, 3 piano’. The two candidates who are now hoping for compensation claim that they suffered serious injuries while playing that game. The recordings in question, in which the candidates had to stand stock still when they came into the field of view of a giant puppet, took place in a large aircraft hangar in Bedford, about 150 kilometers from London, which is now used as a television studio. Because Great Britain was being hit by a severe winter storm at the time of the filming, the temperature in that hangar barely rose above freezing. In combination with a game in which participants often had to remain in the same position for a long time, this resulted in victims.

Dylan Daimin, the only participant from the Low Countries, also testifies in the Dutch Algemeen Dagblad about the extreme conditions. “It was very cold during the recording of Annemaria koekkoek (Dutch name for 1, 2, 3 piano, PD) and that game seems to only last five minutes, in reality the recordings were seven hours long. You weren’t allowed to move, so I’m really talking about standing still for hours and hours. Everything is going to hurt, it’s really bizarre, you never experience that. And then of course the cold doesn’t help. Some people were almost afraid to breathe, and some people were said to have fainted, although I didn’t see that. No, there was 4.5 million at stake, of course I’m not going to look back!”

After various media reported about ambulances being sent to the Squid Game studio, Netflix confirmed that 3 of the 456 participants required medical attention during the recording of the game in question. The British health inspectorate also came to take a look at the set. The inspectors once again urged the production crew to clearly identify the risks for each shot, but ultimately decided that no further action was necessary.

But Daniel Slade, the CEO of Express Solicitors, is convinced mistakes were made. “The participants thought they would participate in something fun. They never thought it would be such an ordeal. They have stood in painful positions for hours in extreme temperatures and are now left with serious injuries.”
