Comparison of Electric Car Prices: Indonesia vs. Malaysia

Jakarta

The choice of electric cars in Indonesia is increasingly diverse. However, when compared with the neighboring country, Malaysia, the selling price of electric cars in Indonesia is much more expensive.

For example, the comparative selling price of the BMW iX electric car is around IDR 780 million. In Malaysia, BMW sells the iX xDrive40 Sport variant at a price of MYR 475,690 or the equivalent of IDR 1.586 billion. Meanwhile in Indonesia, the same car is sold for IDR 2.367 billion.

Even in the entry level electric car class, BMW Malaysia can sell the iX1 eDrive30 variant for MYR 275,800 or the equivalent of IDR 919 million. Meanwhile in Indonesia, the lower variant of the iX1, aka eDrive20, is priced at IDR 1.447 billion.

This price difference occurs due to differences in tax incentives provided by the Malaysian and Indonesian governments.

According to BMW Group Indonesia Director of Sales Ariefin Makaminan, the selling prices of BMW electric cars in Indonesia and Malaysia are difficult to compare. Because the tax relief provided by the Malaysian government is not like in Indonesia.

“Yes, the difference is that in Malaysia there are incentives from the Malaysian government itself. Which is, in fact, probably almost a 50 percent tax cut if they did. In Indonesia it can’t be like that. “That’s why the price is so different (iX1 in Indonesia and Malaysia),” said Ariefin to journalists at the launch of the BMW iX1 in Jakarta, Friday (2/2/24).

“So it’s quite difficult to compare between Malaysia and Indonesia, because tax incentive issued by the Malaysian government totally different,” he continued.

In fact, this significant price difference only occurs in the electric car segment. Looking at the BMW price list in Malaysia, petrol engined cars are sold at prices similar to those in Indonesia.

For example, a CBU car, BMW Z4 eDrive30i M Sport. This iconic roadster sedan from Germany is sold for MYR 473,244 or the equivalent of IDR 1.578 billion. Now! In Indonesia, the same car is sold for an off-road price of IDR 1.567 billion.
