Comparison of Cooking Oil Prices in Indonesia with Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and the Philippines Page all

KOMPAS.com – The government has officially revoked the highest retail price (HET) for cooking oil on Thursday (17/3/2022).

Since then, cooking oil price in various regions in Indonesia continues to rise. In fact, 2 liter packaged cooking oil is priced at IDR 50,000 at a number of modern retailers.

In addition to the significant price increase, the revocation of the HET was also followed by the recovery of cooking oil stocks.

Seeing the price of cooking oil in Indonesia, which is still a polemic, how does it compare to the price of cooking oil in other countries?

Reported from the National Strategic Food Price Information Center (PIHPS), via: KOMPAS.com, On Friday (18/3/2022) afternoon, bulk cooking oil is priced at an average of IDR 17,850 per kg.

Meanwhile, packaged cooking oil of brand 1 and brand 2 are priced at Rp 22,150 and Rp 21,300 per kg, respectively.

For the DKI Jakarta area, packaged cooking oil with brand 1 is priced at Rp. 20,000 per kg and the highest price is in Southeast Sulawesi at Rp. 56,250 per kg.

The price has soared far from the HET for premium packaged cooking oil that the government has revoked, which is Rp. 14,000 per liter.

Prices of cooking oil in Malaysia

Reported from the official website of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP), via KOMPAS.com, The Malaysian government has set a price for cooking oil, as it is called cooking oil in Malaysia, at RM 2.5 or equivalent to Rp. 8,500 per kg.

This price applies to cooking oil subsidized by the government. For non-subsidized cooking oil, KPDNHEP as of December 31, 2021, the price of cooking oil is set at RM 27.9 or equivalent to Rp. 95,100 per 5 kg or Rp. 19,020 per kg.

Cooking oil price in Singapore

Quoted from the CEIC data page, data research from CEIC, via KOMPAS.com, The retail price of cooking oil in Singapore as of January 2022 is 6.8 Singapore dollars per 2 kg or the equivalent of IDR 35,965 per kg.

This price is higher than the average cooking oil in Singapore which is generally sold at a price of 5.97 Singapore dollars per 2 kg or around Rp. 31,575 per kg.

Cooking oil price in Thailand

Citing data from CEIC data, the price of cooking oil in Thailand as of June 2018 was 38.32 baht per liter or equivalent to Rp. 16,523 per liter.

For comparison, citing online shopping site happyfresh.co.th via KOMPAS.com, bottled palm oil is priced at 62 baht per liter or the equivalent of 26,734 per liter.

Prices of cooking oil in the Philippines

The retail price of cooking oil in the Philippines according to data from CEIC as of March 15, 2022 is 81.65 pesos per liter or equivalent to Rp. 22,360 per liter.

This is different from the prices listed on online shopping sites on Friday (18/3/2022). On the site, the price of cooking oil in the Philippines reached 119.75 pesos per liter or the equivalent of Rp. 32,794 per liter.
