Comparison between ‘Cyber 2077’ and ‘Starry Sky’: Game Engine and Player Freedom

“Cyber 2077” has recently received a lot of praise with its game 2.0 update and “Cyber 2077: Free Fantasy” DLC. In the newly released Steam weekly hot game list (excluding free games), the game itself and DLC ranked first and second respectively in the global rankings.

But at the same time, “Starry Sky” promoted by Bethesda and Microsoft has received mixed reviews from players due to issues such as game content and optimization.

Recently, a netizen on the X platform expressed his opinions on the NPC design of “Starry Sky”. This player believes that the NPC animation design of “Star Sky” is not only outdated compared to “Dark Knight 2077”, but the characters are hollow and lack body language, and believes that Bethesda should abandon the current game engine.

However, these remarks caught the attention of Patrick K. Mills, senior mission designer at CD Projekt Red, the developer of “Dytronics 2077”, who refuted the netizen’s views.

He said that he is not an expert in developing game engines, and his experience in creating game tools is not as good as that of programming experts in this area. However, he doesn’t think there is a problem with Bethesda’s game engine. If they want it, he doesn’t think Bethesda is not capable of making such a tool.

However, he believes that this was not Bethesda’s focus when developing Starfield. Starfield has a lot of player freedom, which is actually as important as the game engine. You may not be able to have a date with Judy on the rooftop in the starry sky like in Cyberpunk 2077, but you have hundreds of different planets and different scenes waiting for you to explore at any time.

He said Bethesda spent more time crafting elaborate scenes for key moments and missions, as well as ever-changing characters and incredible locations.

He said that every major scene in “Dark Knight 2077” took several years to produce. In Starry Sky, you can propose to 10 different NPCs, and you can even do it on any one of a thousand different planets. Therefore, it is impossible for Bethesda to carry out complex scene design like “Dynasty 2077”, otherwise the game will never be produced. Instead, they chose to invest production resources into giving players the greatest degree of freedom.

It’s fair for players to certainly hope that their scenes will feel more cinematic or whatever, but that comes at a cost. Not every game can do everything, and you can’t make a game that’s as good as the best in its field in every aspect.

He feels that this is a problem of resource allocation and has little to do with the engine used in the game. It is quite ignorant for players to simply push their dissatisfaction to the game engine tool.

In fact, this is not the first time Mills has spoken for “Starry Sky”. Previously, some netizens compared details such as the water surface texture of “Starry Sky” with “Dynasty 2077” and said that Bethesda’s work “lacked the details and realism in CD Projekt Red’s works.” Mills retorted that this comparison was not objective. , and it makes no sense.
