Comparing the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra and Galaxy Z Flip5: Clamshell Phone Showdown

We now have two relatively fresh new clamshell phones on the Czech market – the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra and the Galaxy Z Flip5. Both have a very similar recommended price tag, so today we’ll compare them, including photography capabilities.

Construction

Structurally, these are very similar phones, including dimensions. The thickness is even exactly the same, namely 15.1 mm when closed. The weight is also practically identical – 184.5 vs 187 grams in favor of Motorola. The inner panel is a little bigger on the Motorola, so it’s a little bigger in width and height. But enough parameters.

In reality, the feel of the two phones is different, because while the Razr has rounded sides, the Flip offers sharp, flat sides and is such a bigger brick. The rounded sides fit a little better on my clam shell – the phone fits better in my hand and, above all, it opens better.

I would rate the hinge a little better done by Samsung. I simply feel better about it, it seems more precise and of better quality. There is no crack in the closed state of both mobile phones this year, which I rate very positively. The minus for Motorola is the fact that it is not waterproof.

External display

The external display offers almost the same diagonal on both devices (3.4 vs 3.6 inches in favor of Motorola), but the approach is completely different. Samsung gives you space above the cameras in the shape of a folder, while Motorola, on the other hand, made the cameras a hole in the display. Personally, I like Razr’s approach better in real life, even though it’s sometimes not as practical. In addition, a big advantage of the Razr 40 Ultra is the fact that its external panel is 144 Hz. The Flip5 only has a 60Hz panel.

The whole philosophy of the outer panel is also different. Motorola will basically allow you to launch any application here and you basically have a full-fledged launcher and system with everything, Samsung takes it more like a space for widgets with a marginal possibility to launch something.

Ditch

The divide at the bend, or ditch, is definitely much less noticeable on the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra, both visually and when swiping. Samsung should definitely work on this.

Hardware

In the field of hardware, on the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 easily wins because it has the newer Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 (for Galaxy) this year. Motorola Razr 40 Ultra has last year’s Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. Samsung also has faster UFS 4.0 storage and faster USB 3.2. In practice, in the Geekbench 6 benchmark, the scores differ by about 500 points in multi-core and a few hundred in single-core. After the third run of the benchmark in a row, the Samsung warmed up a bit more and the single-core score came closer to the Razr.

The battery of both phones is almost the same size (3700 vs 3800 mAh) and the endurance from my experience is very similar. Here I will then link to the respective reviews of both models, where you will find even more details about the battery:

Software

Both phones are exemplary optimized and run like clockwork. With the Razr, we have almost pure Android with Motorola gadgets, while Samsung, on the other hand, can impress some or disappoint others with its more massive OneUI 5.1.1 superstructure. But what probably pleases everyone is the longer support by one year at Samsung, both for major updates and security ones.

Camera

On the back, in both phones, we have a set of main and ultra-wide-angle sensors, all of them are 12MPx, except for the ultra-wide-angle one on the Motorola, which has 13MPx. But that’s not the only difference of this sensor, because it only has a viewing angle of 108 degrees, where Samsung offers 123 degrees, and that’s a big difference visible at first glance.

In practice, during the day, Samsung takes photos that are more colorful, more contrasty and more in focus. They also usually choose a shorter time than Motorola, which will calmly wait. However, the level of detail is almost the same in the daytime, and the same can be said for HDR. Personally, I like the colors of the photos a bit more on the Motorola, they look more realistic.

In poorer lighting conditions, the Flip 5’s cameras fizz a bit more, on the other hand, as night falls and the night mode is activated, it has the upper hand. Of course, the Razr also has a night mode, but it doesn’t capture as long, the Samsung captures even 5 seconds in total darkness, while the Motorola captures usually a maximum of a second. All photos were taken handheld.

The ultra wide-angle sensor is similar to the main one. As I mentioned before, it is much wider on the Flip. At night, both phones suffer from this sensor, especially with the choice of colors.

Evaluation

So which clam is better? I’d say it depends on your preferences which features are more important to you. Do you want a waterproof shell, longer software support, slightly better night photos, but still more contrasty during the day, or a newer processor? Choose Galaxy Z Flip5. On the other hand, do you want a less noticeable divide in the bend, more external display options, cleaner Android or rounded sides? Choose the Razr 40 Ultra. It’s not that easy.
