In terms of personality they couldn’t be more different. Yet Mathilde and Máxima are regularly spotted in a very similar outfit. Jelka from Garderobe Royale and Josine from Fashion Queen Máxima went together in search of royal duplicates. In this blog you will see four examples.

Josine: “In the summer of 2021, fashion house Natan is captivated by the pleated technique. With pleating, a substance is applied with great precision between extensive cardboard molds. By folding the molds back into their original shape and placing them in a steam cabin, the shape of the molds is pressed into the fabric. What then emerges is a design with many folds and volume. Apparently Máxima and Mathilde are both up for that. The Dutch queen purchases a green version, which she combines with brown accessories. The Belgian queen, in turn, opts for the fresh color combination of fuchsia-bright red. A matching hat with pleated pleats and a belt with the same design complete the picture.”

Just say it: which styling of the pleated dress do you like better?

The same and yet different
Josine: The fact that the look & feel of a dress is largely determined by the appearance of the wearer, the fit and the chosen accessories is evident from the collage below. Mathilde and Máxima wear the same Natan design, with a ¾ sleeve, subtly flared skirt and a matching belt. Yet it produces two very different overall pictures. Also striking: Mathilde wears her belt in the right direction (clockwise) and Máxima wears it in the wrong direction. Isn’t this a perfect reflection of their character?”

Three for the price of one?
Jelka: “We can compare this dress with a heart-shaped neck in no fewer than three different versions, because Mathilde bought it in two different versions. She is clearly a fan of a version with a print, judging by her red dress with a floral print and a white dress with a leaf print, while Máxima lets the model of the dress speak for itself with a pastel blue color. It appears to be plain, but if you look up close you can see a subtle floral effect.”

Unobtrusive duplication
Jelka: “The houndstooth design in which Máxima’s trouser suit was made is the showstopper here, so the buttons on the blazer are barely noticeable. This in turn ensures that you do not realize that it is actually the same pantsuit as the red pantsuit that is one of Mathilde’s big favorites. She has worn it so often in recent years that it is one of her most worn outfits ever.
