Comparing Movistar Plus+ with the Extinct Canal+: A Look at Premium Television in Spain

Compare the new Movistar television package with the extinct Canal+ It may seem unfortunate, but the truth is that the spirit of the change in the operator shares the old strategy of those of us who bet on premium television in the 90s: offer more options to the customer with special emphasis on own content and film premieres. Perhaps Movistar Plus+ is not for everyone, especially in times where there is an abundance of streaming content. Even so, it has very positive details.

Looking back, I still remember that change that took place on TV at 10:00 p.m., that jump between an undistorted broadcast and the encrypted one on Canal+. This chain marked a before and after in Spanish television, his landing was the germ of the premium operator packages that we currently have available. With the evolution that led Movistar Plus+ to the present day, the recent leap taken by the platform is reminiscent of what Canal+ offered at the time. Saving the enormous temporal distances, of course.

More simplicity with a standalone ‘all in one’

Along with my first salary, and apart from the Super Nintendo that I bought to play the wonderful Yoshi’s Island, a subscription to Canal+ fell for my house. At the time I opted for the first-run cinema offered by the platform, used to watch his documentaries and also appreciated the great variety of free-to-air content that was broadcast for everyone: from the mythical Lo + Plus to the Puppets, for example. This desire for its own content, premium television and premiere cinema is maintained in Movistar Plus+.

I contracted the new package on August 1 and I have been accessing all its content since that day. Under my needs, Movistar Plus+ forms the perfect set to complement the rest of subscriptions; something to which I admit to being somewhat addicted: I pay for Netflix and Disney+, I also share other subscriptions with friends. And it is not that Movistar Plus+ seems essential to me, since I had access to DTT and the last seven days with the initial package of my Movistar rate, but it has complemented my platforms with a key element: recent releases from any distributor.

HBO Max offers the latest movies, but only from the production companies behind Discovery. With Disney + it happens more or less the same, Netflix does not exactly specialize in releases from other distributors apart from its own. And Movistar Plus+ brings together these shortcomings to offer a set that currently offers 369 film premieres and 301 current series; apart from content with a little more time on billboards and everything that has been offered by the channels included in television. The catalog is not small. Nor gigantic, on the other hand.

I decided to bet on Movistar Plus+ to cover the lack of “premium” TV in my subscriptions, since there are channels that are popular in my house and to which we did not have access (National Geographic and the Cocina channel, for example). Due to the promotional cost for clients, it seemed to me a sensible subscription, not so much outside the operator: The 14 euros that Movistar Plus+ is worth independently makes its recommendation somewhat more difficult. Even so, I understand that there is another value that is not very important to me: sport. For those who want to watch sports competitions, they may rent the subscription outside of Movistar’s rates; with the downside that it is still impossible to watch all the football without being tied to a fiber and mobile rate. It’s a delay.

Movistar Plus+ continues to maintain a ‘classic’ television mentality

That the television of a lifetime is disappearing it is a factstreaming has grown to become the priority way of accessing television (even if television broadcasts are reproduced). Accessing content in a non-linear way is the majority choice for a good part of the public; even if there is still an audience that prefers to sit down and “see what they throw out.” Movistar Plus+ is mainly aimed at this group of viewers.

The purely streaming content within Movistar Plus+ is high, the list of premieres and series is one of the aspects that convinces me the most, although this catalog it is far behind in terms of volume when compared to those of Netflix or Disney+. In addition, these two rivals have a much more segmented catalog: finding Movistar Plus+ content specifically aimed at children or adolescents, to give two examples, is difficult. Yes, there are thematic channels and also movies, but they are in the minority.

Canal+ broke the mold at a time when private television had just started in Spain and there was no pay broadcast available. Drawing a monetary comparison, when I started paying for Canal+ I had to pay around 4,000 pesetas at that time; a cost that, after adding inflation, it would be equivalent to about 40 euros from now. And only for one channel. For that price, I currently multiply the content by several figures.

Canal+ cost about 40 euros a month in the 90s, including inflation. And only for a linear channel

Seen in perspective, streaming platforms have massively popularized access to premium and on-demand media content, all with one big problem: the catalog of services is as growing as it is endless. And Movistar Plus+ has to fight one-on-one with giants like Netflix and company: for those who are only looking for streaming series and movies, it will surely not rent. If it is like in my case, that you also want to disconnect from the terrestrial antenna without losing the option of “classic” television, Movistar Plus+ is a good option. It has it in the DNA.
