Comparing Choir Performance Photos: Before and After the Song Festival

In the spring, when the choir singers were competing for grades in the shows (let’s be honest, there was only doubt about getting to the upcoming Song and Dance Festival… I don’t even know who), I had fun on social media, comparing the “before” and “after” pictures of the choirs. How the same choir looked “in the off-season”, when the Song Festival seemed to be just around the corner, and in the happy group photo after the performance. In the photos, I saw choirs whose queues for the show time were much thicker than during the off-season. Apparently, new singers “on projects” had joined them. Perhaps, some even only for one project – Song Festival.

Why am I even having fun comparing group photos of choirs? At that time, heated discussions were going on about the Riga Project Choir, which received criticism from some for not respecting “tradition”, and from others – support and words of appreciation for their professional sound, so I wanted to see how much other choirs follow their celebrated tradition. Not many people seem to be paying attention.

There will be a lot of “wrong” in this article, because I also jumped into the last Song Festival bandwagon myself – I joined the choir only in the season before the Song Festival, when there were only a few months left until the show. It’s just that neither I nor other singers who woke up at the last moment created a threatening prospect for anyone – the opportunity to unbutton some of the leading collectives in the upcoming “Choir wars” (again, to be honest – we didn’t qualify for them at all), so no one paid public attention to us.
