Comparing Breakdown Assistance Costs: Non-Member vs VAB Member

Daan called VAB for help. There was no social assistance contract attached to his girlfriend’s car. Therefore, he paid the rate as a non-member. Then you pay 198 euros for a one-off breakdown assistance, on the condition that the breakdown assistant can solve the problem on site. In this case that was of course not possible, and the amount then comes to 290 euros including towing up to a distance of 50 kilometers. If your car needs to be towed further, there will be additional costs: if you have it towed up to a distance of, for example, 70 kilometers, you will pay 390 euros.

An important advantage: that cost immediately includes an annual contract for breakdown assistance with VAB. But you have to pay for the pumping out and cleaning by the garage owner yourself because that is a pure repair cost. Daan ultimately paid 290 euros to VAB and 160 euros in repair costs to his garage owner, a total of 450 euros.

What if Daan had been a VAB member? Then you are covered if you have refueled incorrectly. Your basic membership price costs 149 euros per year. “Our roadside assistance will tow you to your garage or to another location, regardless of the distance. The costs for pumping out and possibly flushing and replacing parts remain for the driver,” says Vergauwen. In any case, that would have cost Daan a lot less: 309 instead of 450 euros.
