‘Compared to the collapse of the USSR, this is nothing’: Japanese journalist struck by Russian response to sanctions

/Pogled.info/ He thinks that the West made a mistake with the sanctions. They are unlikely to have a significant impact on Russia’s economy.

Recently, the Japanese journalist Wataru Nakamura published a material on the state of the Russian economy on the Yahoo News Japan portal. The conclusions were unexpected, at least for foreign readers. The West and Japan still believe that “Russian economy is broken” or “destroyed to the core”, as consistently claimed in the US. The opinion of a Japanese journalist working in Moscow was a revelation for many.

– There were no serious difficulties, as the Japanese imagine. For example, there were no long queues for goods in front of ATMs or emptying of store shelves. Television shows situations well if “something happens”, but not so well if “almost nothing happens”, so this state of affairs is practically not reflected – there is nothing to film.

In this regard, from the February and March media reports that came out last year, many might have been left with the impression that the Russian economy would collapse under the impact of the sanctions. Indeed, the consequences of the restrictive measures turned out to be quite serious, but the country’s economy showed incredible resilience – writes Nakamura.

Among the main reasons for such resistance, the author points out several main ones. First, the parallel import. The government very quickly activated this mechanism. That is, it allows importers to import the required products without the permission of the copyright holder. For example, the latest Apple and Samsung smartphone models are coming to Russia. And the total volume of parallel imports last year is estimated at 20 billion dollars.

Second, the continuation and even increase of active trade with China and India, which are not part of the “so-called Western world”, writes the Japanese journalist. And third, self-sufficiency in the food sphere. For the vast majority of vital products, Russia does not depend on other countries.

Finally, another important reason why the situation in the economy is relatively stable is the great adaptability of both business and the population to any crises.

– This is the mentality of the Russians. When we interviewed people, especially those over 40, we heard comments like this: “We lived through the collapse of the USSR. Compared to that, the current ‘cataclysms’ are nothing.” If there are many such citizens, then Russia may be more resilient to economic sanctions than one might thinkNakamura concludes.

Russian experts fully agree with this analysis. Economists credit the government and the Central Bank with a good response to the problems in the economy. How quickly we were able to put out the fire in the financial sector and help businesses rebuild broken economic chains. And the mentality is hard to argue with. It is what it is.

– We have an important feature. We are one of those nations that struggle and survive from generation to generation. If we judge the last 200-300 years, we have hardly had any peaceful years. Constantly either wars or revolutions or famine or collectivization or default. We have already mastered the mechanisms of the Phoenix bird at the genetic level – to rise and develop in defiance of the whole world. That’s what’s happening this time too– explains psychiatrist Alexander Fedorovich.
