Company lowers the curtain in New York

Sadness! The revival of Company, a musical by Stephen Sondheim and George Furth, will perform for the last time on July 31 in New York after 32 previews and 268 performances. The show should then go on tour in the United States in 2023-2024.

Producer Chris Harper explains: “It’s an incredible opportunity in a lifetime to be able to stage a play by Stephen Sondheim on Broadway. I once again thank all the teams for their dedication to this project which was so complicated because of the pandemic. of Covid-19. We still have a few weeks to enjoy the Jacobs Theater before we start our US tour.”

This production, which premiered in London in 2019, brought the 1970 musical up to date. The genders of several characters were reversed for the occasion.

During Bobbie’s 35th birthday, her friends question the young woman. Why isn’t she married? Why can’t she find a suitable man? Why has she still not started a family? This cult show contains some of Sondheim’s greatest hits like The Ladies Who Lunch, Being Alive, Side by Side et You Could Drive a Person Crazy.

I had the chance to attend this production in London in 2019. The work was already one of my favorite musicals, but this production exceeded all my expectations as it was exceptional.

Company carried over 5 Tony Awards in 2022 including Best Revival of a Musical.
