Company Lauritzen, Emilie Enger Mehl

The Minister of Justice and Emergency Management Emilie Enger Mehl (28) has for the past two months been seen as a participant in the popular entertainment program “Kompani Lauritzen” on TV 2.

Mehl believes she learned a lot at “Kompani Lauritzen” which she brings with her into her job as a politician:

But Mehl has not only been one of many participants in “Kompani Lauritzen”. The 28-year-old has proven to impress greatly in the program, and will be in the final on Saturday night with Emilie Nereng (26), Rikke-Mari Isaksen (27) and Marius Skjelbæk (31). There, the four will fight for the victory in the competition, where the one who reaches the very top wins a sword.

However, the fact that the Minister of Justice and Emergency Preparedness is participating in a reality show has created some reactions, especially considering that Russia invaded Ukraine and a war broke out a few days before the show premiered on television.

– It was a very special week, says Mehl to Nettavisen.

– On the day it premiered on TV, it was only a few days after the war in Ukraine broke out, she adds.

– Understand that it has been a special time

The 28-year-old Minister of Justice and Emergency Preparedness from Lørenskog was “only” one of several parliamentary representatives when the program was recorded at Setnesmoen camp last summer.

Little did the politician know that shortly afterwards she would be in government as Minister of Justice and Emergency Preparedness and that war would break out in Ukraine when the program was to be broadcast on television.

As mentioned, it created some reactions, including from Kjetil B. Alstadheim, political editor of Aftenposten.

“There is war in Ukraine. At the same time, Norway’s emergency minister is playing war as Saturday entertainment. It’s completely absurd »he wrote on Twitter ahead of the premiere.

Mehl says that she also thinks it has been a special time to be both a minister and a reality participant at the same time:

– For my part, everything that is about the broadcast time and the type of editorial decisions that TV 2 makes has nothing to do with me. I understand that it has been a special time, and I thought so myself. I believe almost everyone in the production and knew about it.

The 28-year-old points out, however, that the TV program conveys good values and has done a lot for the Norwegian Armed Forces.

– “Kompani Lauritzen” is about very fine values, such as unity, mastery, standing in difficult things and developing as a human being. And those values I think are relevant anyway.

Clear message from the channel

Prior to each program, TV 2 emphasized that the recording took place before Emilie Enger Mehl became Minister in the form of a text poster. It has been a choice on the part of TV 2.

– I have not asked them to do it, but I think it is good that it is informed about, Mehl says to Nettavisen.

– When something is broadcast on TV now, it may not be so easy to immediately understand that this was recorded a long time ago, long before I became minister, the 28-year-old adds.

Recently, the channel has chosen to do the same by informing and warning viewers that “Kompani Lauritzen” was recorded before the war in Ukraine began, and that certain scenes in the program may be reminiscent of war and war.

Full Ukraine focus

But even though some have been critical of the 28-year-old’s TV participation, Mehl assures that most of her time has primarily gone to work as a minister.

– At the very beginning of the program, there was full focus on the Ukraine crisis, and so far it has been all the way. When the war broke out, it had many consequences for Norway, and several of them are my responsibility. Among other things, immigration, as many refugees have come here, the politician says.

– So it was important to work as fast as we could to prepare Norway to receive them and handle security, not least.

Between battles, however, she has had some time to watch the program.

– But it has definitely been most focus on politics.

– And I notice that now, because it feels as if this season has gone extremely fast, she says.
