Berlin In view of the more expensive materials, German construction companies are planning price increases across the board. In building construction, every second company is currently calculating with price adjustments for the coming months, according to the survey published on Thursday by the Munich Ifo Institute.

Accordingly, price increases were also planned in civil engineering, but not quite as frequently as in building construction. “This is a consequence of the rapid increase in the cost of building materials, which will now be passed on to customers,” said Ifo researcher Felix Leiss. Effects of the war in Ukraine are not included in the survey.

Last year, the upheavals of the corona pandemic caused various bottlenecks in various building materials. This tense supply situation hit the industry with uninterrupted good demand for construction work and full order books. “Material prices rose drastically as a result of the scarcity,” said Leiss.

In February, 23.5 percent of building construction companies complained about delivery problems with building materials, after 25.3 percent in the previous month. In civil engineering, the proportion was 17.5 percent, after 20.9 percent in January. “There were still problems, especially with the insulating materials,” said Leiss. “Wood is currently playing a bigger role again.”

This can be seen in the wholesale of wood and also in building elements made of wood. Price increases have been reported very often here. In building construction, the range of orders on hand continued to increase during the corona pandemic. From 4.4 months in January 2020 to an all-time high of 5.5 months now.

“The effects of the war in Ukraine on the construction industry cannot be foreseen at the moment,” said Ifo researcher Leiss. The current survey was completed before the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24th.
