Companies see their existence as less threatened than the Crown crisis

Istituto ifo, Pressemitteilung from 31.10.2022

7.5% of companies currently see their economic existence threatened. This is the result of a survey by the ifo institute. “During the Corona peak, these numbers were significantly higher, at 21.8%. In view of the sharp economic slowdown, companies are proving very strong, “says Klaus Wohlrabe, head of ifo surveys. The percentage has increased only slightly since the last survey in April, when it was 7.1 percent.

Particularly affected is currently the retail sector, where 11.6 per cent of companies reported a situation that threatened its existence (April: 6.9 per cent). “The current inflationary dynamics are causing great concern for retailers,” says Wohlrabe.

Among service providers, the share fell from 9.3 to 7.7 percent. Small businesses, the self-employed and the hotel sector are particularly concerned. On the other hand, IT or real estate companies are worry free.

In the manufacturing sector, 7 percent see their existence threatened (April: 4.9 percent). The situation remains difficult for many companies in the textile sector (33.6%) and printers (18.6%). But concerns have also increased in the metal industry. “Rising energy prices have led to a slight increase in fear of existence, especially in energy-intensive sectors,” says Wohlrabe. “However, the industry orders are still well filled.”
